Where do crappie go right after the spawn?

They reverse the spring migration in stages. Spent females leave first, sliding back to the staging structure — channel edges, brush at 3–6 m (10–20 ft) — to recover and feed; males stay shallow another one to two weeks guarding nests and fry, then follow. Within a few weeks the fish re-form into the sex-mixed schools of summer and begin drifting toward the thermocline over open water. The transition fools anglers because the shallows go dead suddenly; the fish are usually just one structural step deeper, not gone.
