What do muskie actually eat?

One thing, overwhelmingly: fish, and preferably large, soft-rayed, cylinder-shaped fish that slide down easily. Diet studies across the range keep returning the same leaderboard — suckers and redhorse first, then yellow perch, ciscoes and whitefish in the lakes that have them, plus bullheads, shiners, and whatever soft-bodied species is locally abundant. Spiny, deep-bodied prey like sunfish get eaten but are demonstrably under-selected relative to their abundance. The lure-box translation is direct: the muskie market's obsession with 20–35 cm (8–14 in) baits in sucker brown, perch bars, and cisco silver is not fashion, it is the stomach-contents data wearing paint.
