Do crappie ever stop eating zooplankton?
No — and this is a key difference from bass. A largemouth outgrows plankton in its first summer and never looks back; a crappie adds minnows to the menu as it grows but keeps grazing zooplankton for life, with gill rakers built for straining and eyes built for picking tiny targets. Even a 35 cm (14 in) slab fills out its diet with plankton whenever crustacean clouds are thick and minnows are scarce, especially in winter. It is the deep reason tiny 2.5–5 cm (1–2 in) baits catch the biggest crappie in the lake.
