Fluorocarbon or PE braid — and is nylon ever right?
Fluorocarbon 8-12 lb is the default: it sinks, so it helps the bait hold depth and suspend, and it has little stretch at fishing loads. PE 0.6-0.8 with a 1.5-2 m fluoro leader for micro baits on spinning gear and for casting into wind — with a moderate-fast tip, or the trebles tear out. Nylon is a rubber band: its 20-30 % stretch swallows the slow "weight" bite on the pause, and it floats the bait up. Not for jerkbaits; if you want a shallow runner to stay up, go to a lighter soft fluoro or the floating model of the bait.
