What do crappie eat at night versus during the day?
The menu rotates with the vertical migration of the food web. By day, zooplankton hides deep in the dim layers and crappie pick minnows and larvae around structure and the thermocline. After dark, the plankton rises toward the surface, minnows follow it up, and crappie follow the minnows — the whole food column shifts upward and often shallower. That is why night crappie are typically caught higher in the water than day crappie on the same spot, and why dock lights work: they short-circuit the migration by stacking the entire chain in one lit column.
