Jig hooks and jig heads: Ball jig heads

The round head is the all-round jig head, and it comes in four builds, each its own page: original (exposed hook), weedless (a guard over the point), swing (the head hinged to the hook) and Texas-rigged (the head on an offset hook). Two things every ball head is chosen by, whatever the build:

How the head holds the bait

The 90° threading trick. A shank barb tears the plastic as it goes in, and once the channel is torn the barb has nothing to grip. So thread the bait with the hook turned 90° to its final position: the barb passes through untouched plastic. When the bait reaches the head, turn it back 90° into line. The barb now presses against solid plastic that was never cut, and it reinforces the bait instead of tearing it.

A ball head is the least stable at rest: it rolls onto its side. When the bait must sit still, use a stand-up or football head. Top-heavy round heads built for strolling are their own class (Strolling jigs).
