What happens to pike as the water starts cooling in early fall?

The summer size-segregation dissolves. As surface temperatures fall back through roughly 18 °C (64 °F), the thermal wall that kept big pike deep comes down, and they begin sliding up onto deep weed edges, rock points, and flats — while baitfish schools start their own fall reshuffle toward wintering areas. It is a transition in the true sense: fish are moving between summer and fall homes, so location gets less stable day-to-day even as average size on the same spots starts climbing. Follow the green weeds; beds that die early lose their pike first.
