What happens to crappie as the water starts cooling in early fall?

Cooling water dissolves the summer arrangement. As the surface drops back through about 21–15 °C (70–59 °F), the thermocline weakens, bait pulls into creek arms and onto deeper flats, and crappie follow — schools tighten, slide along channel edges, and begin feeding harder on a metabolism still warm enough to burn. Mid-depth structure that was empty all summer — 3–6 m (10–20 ft) brush, channel bends, bridge pilings — loads up. It is a moving target week to week, but the fish that were scattered in August are concentrated by October at almost every latitude.
