How many muskie does a lake actually hold?

Shockingly few — this is the number that explains the whole sport. Healthy natural populations run on the order of one adult per 2–4 hectares (5–10 acres); a very good 400-hectare (1,000-acre) lake might hold one or two hundred adult fish, and only a fraction of those are trophies. Compare a bass lake carrying tens of fish per hectare and you see why muskie fishing is a low-encounter game and why every mortality matters: killing one big female can remove a measurable share of a lake's trophy potential for a decade. Low density is also why release culture took over the sport almost completely.
