Can muskie and pike coexist in the same lake?

They can, but the peace is fragile and history shows which way it tips. Native co-existing populations sort by micro-habitat and timing, yet wherever pike were introduced into muskie water — Wisconsin and Ontario have textbook cases — muskie declined, and the mechanism is the spawning calendar: pike spawn weeks earlier at 4–10 °C (40–50 °F), so their fry are big enough to eat the muskie fry that hatch into the same bays. Adult competition matters less than that nursery-window ambush. It is why fisheries agencies treat illegal pike introductions as serious ecological damage, and why some muskie waters are maintained only by continuous stocking.
