Do muskie live in fast rivers and small lakes?

In rivers, yes — beside the fast water, not in it. The muskie is a native river fish of the St. Lawrence, Ottawa, upper Mississippi and Ohio drainages, but a long ambush body is expensive to hold against heavy flow, so river fish sit in the soft spots next to it: eddies, the tails of pools, slack water below rapids and dams, the inside of bends. They feed along the seam where current delivers prey. Small water is the harder question. A muskie is a low-density predator — roughly one adult per several hectares on good water — with a large home range, so a small pond has room for a handful at best, and they are usually stocked fish. Small lakes can fish well; they just never hold many.
