How many crappie should I keep, and what size?

Two honest anchors. First, the law: limits vary enormously — many US states allow 15–30 fish daily, while Ontario's standard is 30 under a Sport licence (10 under Conservation), some waters carry size or reduced limits, so check the current local regulations every season, not once. Second, the biology: crappie populations absorb harvest of abundant mid-size fish well, but big slabs of 30 cm (12 in) and up are many years old and the slowest part of the population to replace — especially in the north, where a 35 cm (14 in) Canadian crappie can be over 10 years old. A sustainable pattern that also eats best: keep a modest number of 20–28 cm (8–11 in) fish for the pan and release the biggest females.
