Why do I get so many short strikes and bumped lures?

Because trout are pursuit feeders that grab rather than inhale — a largemouth bass vacuums the whole lure in from a standstill, but a trout closes distance and nips, and if size, speed, or trailing hooks feel wrong, the nip is all you get. Short striking spikes when the lure runs bigger than the prevailing prey, when cold water has dulled the fish's closing speed, and among stocked fish still learning what food is. Fixes in order of reliability: go one size smaller, slow down or add pauses so the fish can catch up, and on flies trail a smaller pattern behind the first. A fish that bumps twice and vanishes has inspected you at close range and voted no — change something real before recasting.
