Are glow jigs worth it for crappie?
In the dark half of crappie fishing, yes. Crappie feed heavily at night, under the ice and in deep or stained water, and in all three a jig is found by brightness long before colour. A phosphorescent head or body gives the up-staring fish a small bright point to rise to, and glow jigs are standard in northern ice fishing, where the best hour is often after sunset. Two cautions. Recharge the paint every few drops — it fades within minutes. And more is not better: a faint glow reads as food, while a blazing jig in clear water can hold fish off, so try a glow head on a plain body first. In clear water under a bright sky glow adds nothing; go back to smoke, pearl and silver flake.
