Do crappie really see colour? Where do white, yellow, green and blue jigs fit?
Crappie belong to the sunfish family alongside the black bass, whose two-cone eye separates reds and greens and reads blue as dark; crappie probably see along similar lines, but their eye has rarely been tested directly, so hold that loosely. Practice is clearer. White and pearl are the backbone — they match the minnow a crappie rises to, and stay bright in dim water. Yellow works as a visibility colour in stain, usually paired with white or chartreuse. Blue earns its keep in two-tone jigs such as blue-and-white, where it supplies the dark half of a contrast, not a hue. Plain green is seldom a stand-alone crappie colour. Underneath it all sits the rule from clear to muddy: natural and translucent in clear water, bold contrast in stain.
