Straight-shank hooks: Circle hooks
The point is turned back toward the shank. When a fish swims off with the bait and the line comes tight, the hook slides to the corner of the mouth and rolls in. You do not set it; you reel.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Shape | Point turned 90° back toward the shank; inline or offset point |
| Wire | Standard, forged |
| Sizes | #2–2/0 for bass; 2/0 is common for wacky |
| Rigs | Live bait, cut bait, wacky and drop shot (fewer fish lost) |
| How to hook | Let the line come tight and sweep; a hard jerk pulls it out |
| Why | Far fewer deep-hooked fish; some events require it for live bait |
Not for moving baits (jerkbaits, crankbaits, swimbaits): the fish hits and turns too fast for the hook to roll into the corner.
