Where do trout go right after spawning?

They drop back and eat. Spent rainbows ("drop-backs") slide downstream out of the tributaries through late spring, pausing in the deeper pools and river mouths to rebuild condition — thin, hungry, and famously aggressive, they are a better sporting target than the spawners ever were. In lakes, post-spawn rainbows scatter along shorelines while surface water sits in their comfort band. For the fall spawners the same drama runs in reverse season: brook and lake trout finish in November and feed hard in cold water until ice; by the following spring both are simply "spring pattern" fish. The universal rule: post-spawn trout are recovery feeders — find food concentrations, not spawning habitat.
