Bass are just starting to spawn — where are the walleye?
A month or more past their own spawn, and mid-transition. When largemouth hit beds at 15–18 °C (59–64 °F), male walleye are still hanging near the spawning rivers and reefs eating well — they are the reliable early-season fish — while the big females have dropped into adjacent deeper water, 5–10 m (16–33 ft), recovering and feeding in short windows: the famous post-spawn funk. As the water pushes through the mid-teens °C (upper 50s to low 60s °F), both waves string out along the migration routes toward summer structure — the first points, bars, and flats between spawning site and summer range. Fish the route, not the destination: work structure progressively farther from the spawning area until you contact fish.
