Which baitfish matter most — smelt, alewife, perch?

Whichever one your lake actually has — but each writes a different playbook. Pelagic silver forage (smelt, alewife, ciscoes, emerald shiners) pulls smallmouth off structure to suspend and chase in open water: think jerkbaits, flukes, and counted-down drop shots in whites and silvers. Yellow perch are a structure-oriented meal, ambushed along weed edges and gravel — perch-pattern cranks and swimbaits shine there. On many waters the real answer is a rotation: gobies or craws on bottom by day, pelagic bait up in the water column morning and evening, and the anglers who track which channel is open catch the most.
