Why do smaller baits often outfish big ones for smallmouth?

Because the bait is being matched to the menu and audited by the eyes. Smallmouth forage skews smaller than largemouth forage — gobies, crayfish, insects, juvenile perch — so a 7–10 cm natural profile simply looks more like dinner than a 15 cm intrusion. Then the inspection habit enforces it: in clear water a wrong-size bait fails the close-range audit that a stained-water largemouth never conducts. The exceptions are real but specific — reaction tactics, territorial fish, and pelagic feeders on big smelt or alewife will hit large baits — but the default smallmouth answer is a size down from your largemouth box.
