How deep do perch schools go on big lakes?
On most lakes the working range ends around 12 m (40 ft): flats, shell beds and basin edges at 6–12 m (20–40 ft) cover summer jumbos, fall schools and the winter basin bite. Big, clear water stretches it. On the Great Lakes and the largest clear inland lakes, schools in late fall and winter are regularly found past 15 m (49 ft), because light for sight-feeding reaches further down and the soft-bottom larvae they graze are there too. Two limits apply. The fish still feeds by eye in daylight, so stained lakes never fish this deep. And a perch has a sealed swim bladder: from 10 m (33 ft) down, plan on keeping what you catch and stopping at your limit. Below about 25 m (82 ft) is not perch fishing anywhere.
