Do black crappie and white crappie prefer different water?
Broadly, yes. Black crappie do best in clearer, cooler water with vegetation — natural lakes, northern waters, weedy bays — where sight feeding pays. White crappie tolerate turbid, silty, warmer water far better and dominate many big wind-swept reservoirs, relying more on hunting in stained light around timber and open flats. Many waters hold both, but if the lake is chalky-green year round, expect the white; if you can see your jig 2 m (6–7 ft) down through weed edges, expect the black.
