Why does fishing around lights at night work so well for crappie?

The light starts a food chain: it concentrates zooplankton, the plankton draws minnows, and the minnows draw crappie. The fish's big, upward-angled eyes are rich in low-light receptors, so a crappie hunting under a light sees every silhouette passing above it while staying hidden in the dark below. Submerged or floating lights, dock lights, and bridge lights all run the same mechanism — fish the shadow edge, not the bright core, and keep the bait above the fish as always.
