Can yellow perch see colour, and which jig colours earn their place?

Almost certainly yes. The perch eye is cone-rich — built for detail in good light — and the perch is a close relative of the walleye, whose colour sensitivity leans toward green and orange-red with little in the blue. Direct behavioural tests on yellow perch are scarce, so treat that as a well-founded assumption rather than proof. The practical record agrees with it: gold, chartreuse and orange are the standing perch palette, and a small red accent — a bead, a hook, a painted eye — is a classic trigger in shallow, clear water. Remember depth: red fades to grey below roughly 3–5 m (10–16 ft), and orange soon after, so deeper down lean on gold flash, chartreuse and glow. And keep it small — a perch inspects at close range, so one bright spot beats a loud bait.
