Why do smallmouth follow my lure to the boat and then turn away?
The follow is the inspection phase running long: the fish is gathering visual information and hasn't found a trigger to commit. Approaching the boat adds two deal-breakers — the hull/angler silhouette overhead and the lure running out of "escaping prey" behavior as it lifts. Convert followers by triggering before the boat: a hard speed burst, a kill-and-fall, or a figure-eight-style direction change 5–10 m (16–33 ft) out. If a fish turns away twice, rest the spot and return with a smaller or more natural profile.
