Grass Edge Fishing (Grass edge fishing): Scenario-Based Tactics: Boat Position, Target, Presentation, and Adjustments
Clean outside grass wall: Go parallel first to hold depth
Keep the boat on the deep side, cast along the grass edge ahead, landing about half to one meter off the wall so the bladed jig runs the outside of the grass tops. Retrieve along the edge with a low rod tip without forcing the bait to crash into the grass. If you lightly tick a strand, pop it free with a short lift and resume pace; if you rip back clumps every cast, increase your outside distance or drop weight.
After the first bite, note how far the bait was from the grass. Pushing your casts progressively farther out into deeper water is not “giving fish space”—you’ll likely leave that narrow traffic lane.
Pockets and lanes: Switch to diagonal cuts
Hold the boat outside the pocket and pitch a Texas rig diagonally into the inside corner. Let it hit bottom, then drag along the lane 20–30 cm and pause two seconds. Next angle, sweep the same inside corner from the opposite wing and compare where you make contact.
Do not drag across the grass wall into a lane; the line gets hung atop the grass and your bait actually suspends outside the cover. Move the boat to the lane mouth first, then drop the bait. If only the outer mouth keeps getting bit, check the mouth first at the next stop; you don’t have to probe all the way to the back every time.
Scattered grass with rock: Use drop shot to control soak time
When isolated rocks sit on the outer grass edge, drop shot to the upstream or upwind side of a rock so the weight lands on hard bottom, without dragging the bait into the grass base. Pause three seconds first, then move only the weight a short distance. Grass strands on the hook will change the bait’s horizontal posture; reel in and clean it.
If you keep touching grass tops but can’t confirm bottom, switch to a buried-point Texas rig to probe gaps. As long as the bait is lying on top of the grass, you can’t use “no bites on drop shot” to rule out the spot.

Treat the grass wall like a shoreline: grass points, pockets, and inside bends are where the fish are.

What to throw here
- Bladed Jig (Chatterbait) — Search above the canopy or outside edge, clearing occasional grass contact.
- Texas Rig — Probe edge pockets and clumps with only enough weight to reach the target.
