Positioning in current: Adjustment checklist, on-water practice, and sources
Next steps when there is or isn’t a response
Holding position is near max thrust: back out to softer current; don’t keep upsizing weights.
Line draped over rocks: change lateral boat position.
Bites vanish in a back-current area: first confirm whether the eddy changed, then change baits.
Hookup while drifting: partner first reels in lines near the trolling motor and anchor rope; clarify who runs the boat and who nets the fish.
On-water practice, logging, and scope of sources
Pick one scenario from this chapter that matches your water, complete one pass with that scenario’s gear, boat position, target selection, and retrieve order, then change one variable. The depth, distance, wait times, and weight ranges above are tunable starting points, not guaranteed fish-producing conditions.
Log the exact target and boat position, the actual depth layer contacted, whether the bite came on the fall or during the drift/retrieve, where the fish was lost if applicable, and the result after adjustments. Only count casts as valid samples if the bait actually traveled through the intended depth without fouling grass. Let your own repeatable results decide whether to continue; don’t stick with a pattern that has gone cold just because you saw it in a tournament report.
Facts in the case come from the original source; scenario sections are our instructional application, not claimed as first-hand by the author, and results from different lakes/seasons are not presented as a catch guarantee.
Return to the tactics index, and plan practice in combination with casting angles and boat drift control.

What to throw here
- Swimbaits (paddle tail, hollow body, line-through, umbrella, lipless/VIB, kicking frog) — Hold downstream with sinking room and bring the bait through before the boat.
- Drop Shot — Select weight for holding a lee pocket or making a controlled downstream drift.
