Positioning in current: Real cases and complete tackle pairings

Real case: What happened and what to learn

A Bassmaster 2017 drop shot feature documented KVD using shallow-current casting with a drop shot in the 2016 Niagara event; the article also distinguishes vertical controlled drifting in deep current.

Read the original report.

Anchoring downstream and casting upstream has a different purpose than backing the boat into the current with the bow into the flow. The former repeats a single entry point; the latter lets the rig pass continuously over a longer bottom stretch. Determine boat position by the path you want the bait to travel first, then consider the trolling motor—not the other way around.

Complete pairing of rig, rod, reel, and line

Below is this site’s starting setup for this chapter’s scenarios; it is not an unsupported list of an angler’s reported gear. Feet are used for depth and rod length, inches for bait length, lb for rated line strength, and oz for weight. 1 oz ≈ 28.35 g, 1 foot ≈ 30.5 cm. M, MH, H indicate medium, medium-heavy, and heavy power; fast action describes the bend profile, not a requirement to retrieve quickly. A reel’s 7:1 denotes gear ratio per handle turn; actual retrieve per turn also depends on spool size.

Shallow current: 7-foot M fast spinning, size 2500 reel, 10 lb braid to 8 lb fluoro leader, 1/4 oz drop shot, size 1 hook, 3–4 inch straight tail, 30 cm leader from hook to weight. Deep current: same rod and line, with 3/8 and 1/2 oz weights on hand. Rock/wood edges: have a 7-foot MH casting rod, 7:1 reel, 15 lb fluoro, and a 3/8 oz Texas. Keep boat-control margin based on your trolling motor and hull; don’t use heavier weights to cover up loss of boat control.
