Weightless Texas Rig: Gear notes
7' (2.1 m) medium or medium-heavy fast casting rod, or a 7' medium spinning rod for skipping; 12-15 lb fluorocarbon (mono if you want it to fall even slower). EWG 3/0 for a 3-3.5 in bait, 4/0 for 3.5-4.5 in. A fluke goes on a non-slip loop knot so it can dart; a stick bait is fine on a Palomar. Watch the line, not the rod: most bites are the line jumping or swimming off on the fall. The common mistake is working it too much — cast, let it fall on slack line to a 5-count, twitch twice, let it fall again.
Weightless Texas Rig
No weight at all — a stick bait or soft jerkbait Tex-posed on a wide-gap hook, falling and darting on its own weight through the top 1.5 m (5 ft) of the water column.
