Steel leader

Single strand is often stiffer; multi-strand can be supple. Hardware affects small-lure posture.

The line is the only thing between you and the fish: stretch, diameter, visibility and abrasion decide the bite and the landing.

  • PE main line for sensitivity and casting; fluorocarbon leader for stealth and abrasion
  • Nylon stretches like a rubber band — topwater only, never finesse
  • PE size is a diameter label, not a strength: the same PE 1.0 tests 10-25 lb by fibre grade
  • US "20 lb" often breaks at 25; a PE label is tight
  1. Handling and control — Single strand is often stiffer; multi-strand can be supple. Hardware affects small-lure posture.
  2. Stretch and recovery — Sharp kinks may persist. Check broken filaments; straightening is not proof of restored strength.
  3. Colour and visibility — Opaque; finish and background affect contrast.
  4. Connections and checks — Use the specified twist, crimp or knot for the exact construction.
  5. Choice and trade-offs — Often lower initial cost; replace damaged sections. Compare equivalent finished leaders. Manufacturer source (design evidence, not a universal test)
