Where do perch stage before the spawn?

Under the last of the ice, schools begin drifting from wintering basins toward the mouths of shallow, weedy bays, river inlets, and marina channels — the doorsteps of the spawning grounds. The pull is gonad-driven and starts while water is still near 4 °C (39 °F), which is why "last ice" over 3–6 m (10–20 ft) flats outside spawning bays is one of the most famous bites of the perch year across Canada and the Great Lakes region. The fish are stacked, feeding, and full of eggs; the crowd only grows as ice-out approaches. Southward, the same staging happens in open water in early spring.
