Where are muskie before the spawn, right after ice-out?
They stage off the spawning grounds: dark-bottomed bays, creek mouths, and flooded marsh edges that warm first, with fish holding on the first drop or flat just outside in 2–5 m (7–16 ft). The move follows water hitting roughly 7–9 °C (45–48 °F), a couple of weeks behind pike using the same bays. The honest caveat is that across most of the native range this window is closed to fishing — seasons open after the spawn precisely because staged, concentrated, pre-spawn muskie are the most vulnerable fish of the year. Where early fishing is legal (some southern reservoirs), slow-rolled rubber and jerkbaits on those staging edges are the play.
