What is the best time of day to fish for walleye?

Rank the windows by light, then adjust for water clarity. The premier window nearly everywhere is the last hour of daylight through the first hours of dark; its mirror at dawn is second; night as a whole out-produces midday on clear lakes; and bright calm midday is the reliable worst. Then let clarity bend the rule: in stained rivers and wind-churned or dark-water lakes the windows smear into a decent all-day bite, while in gin-clear trophy water the day bite can be nearly nonexistent and the whole fishery is effectively nocturnal. Overcast and a good chop count as "low light" any hour of the day. If you can only fish three hours, fish the three that straddle sunset — that single scheduling habit will out-earn most tackle purchases.
