Which leader material should I actually use?

All the defensible options are bite-proof; they trade suppleness, visibility, and fuss. Seven-strand wire (30–45 lb) is the supple, cheap default for casting lures — replace it when kinked. Single-strand wire is thinnest and stiffest, good for trolling, kinks fastest. Titanium costs more but shrugs off kinks and lasts seasons. Heavy fluorocarbon works only at genuine 80–100 lb+ diameters and still gets scarred — inspect after every fish; anything lighter is not pike-proof, whatever the package art implies. What actually loses fish is not leader visibility but leader failure: run 30–45 cm (12–18 in) minimum, longer for big baits, with quality snaps and swivels rated above the leader.
