Do trout move and feed at night?
More than daytime anglers ever see, and the pattern strengthens with size and heat. In midsummer, when daytime stream temperatures brush the danger zone, the largest rainbows shift feeding into night and the dawn hour — moving out of secure lies into shallow tailouts and flats they would never occupy in daylight — and night is when the coldest water and the boldest fish coincide. Brook trout feed actively at dusk and dawn. Lake trout, built for dim light at depth, feed through low-light hours year-round, and under the ice the first and last light windows are consistently the hottest bite. If your local water only shows small fish at noon, the big ones may simply be working a different shift.
