Do lake trout school like other fish?

Not true schooling, but meaningful aggregation — and the difference matters to how you fish them. Lake trout are loosely social hunters: where a cisco or smelt school stacks up, multiple lakers converge and work it, so marking one fish on sonar usually means others share the area, and a hooked fish frequently comes up with followers shadowing it (always drop a second lure down immediately). They also aggregate predictably at spawning shoals in fall and at ice-out structure. But between those concentrations, individuals spread across huge volumes of water. Treat lakers as a "find one, expect several" species clustered on bait — not as a school you can sit on all day.
