Fall Turnover and Fish Suspended Over Open Water
Separate seasonal mixing from the reasons fish hold 3–10 ft below the surface.
Mixing changes the available habitat
As surface water cools, its density approaches that of deeper water and wind can mix the water column more deeply. Timing differs among basins. A waterbody that did not develop persistent summer stratification does not undergo the same kind of autumn breakdown.
Suspension is an observation, not a diagnosis
Fish 3–10 ft (0.9–3 m) below the surface over deep water may be tracking suspended prey or using a suitable temperature, light and oxygen combination. Turnover is one possible context, not proof of the cause. Large fish can use this space too; sonar alone cannot reliably identify species or show that all such fish are feeding.
An on-water approach to test
Scan for bait at the same depth, then compare several passes and nearby areas. Try a lightly weighted swimbait or a suspending jerkbait that stays near or just above the observed targets; verify its actual running depth rather than dropping straight to bottom. Adjust speed and pauses to responses. Record water profiles and weather alongside catches before concluding that turnover created the pattern.
