Underwater Ecology & Fish Behavior

Understand oxygen, vegetation and lake mixing, then test what they mean for the fish in front of you.

• Dissolved Oxygen: Read the Water, Not Just the Surface — How oxygen supply, consumption and depth shape usable fish habitat.
• Why Can the Dawn Bite Be Good When Oxygen Is Lowest? — A daily oxygen minimum does not necessarily mean oxygen stress or poor feeding.
• What Is Under the Green Mat? Plants, Algae and Fish Cover — Distinguish rooted plants from algae, and inspect the habitat beneath the canopy.
• Dying Weeds and Returning Fish — Why fish may leave a decomposing weedbed and later use the remaining cover.
• Why Some Lakes Stratify and Others Keep Mixing — Depth, wind, basin shape and throughflow matter more than a simple north–south rule.
• Fall Turnover and Fish Suspended Over Open Water — Separate seasonal mixing from the reasons fish hold 3–10 ft below the surface.
