Wakebait: What it is

A hard bait — often jointed — with a sharply angled short lip that keeps it waking in the top inch (2-3 cm) of the water column instead of diving. Reeled dead-slow, it pushes a rolling V-wake that imitates a bluegill or shiner cruising the surface film.
