Why do such tiny jigs catch such big crappie?
Because big crappie never stopped eating small things. The fish's feeding machinery — upward eyes for spotting tiny silhouettes, a sipping strike, plankton-straining gill rakers — is optimized for small prey and stays that way for life, so a 4 cm (1.5 in) jig sits dead-center in a two-kilogram slab's search image. A giant bait does not select for giant crappie the way it can for bass; it mostly just gets refused. If you want bigger fish, change location and depth to find the bigger year class — not lure size.
