How does the crappie diet shift through the year?

It slides along a plankton-to-fish axis with temperature and prey supply. Winter is the most planktonic season — cold fish sip zooplankton and the occasional sluggish minnow. Spring adds insect larvae and staging minnows as everything warms. Summer and early fall are the fishiest months: young-of-year shad and minnows flood the lake, and crappie feed heavily on them at the thermocline. Late fall swings back toward mixed feeding as bait schools thin. Match the axis, not just the season — small and subtle in cold water, minnow-profile and slightly larger when young baitfish are everywhere.
