Why do muskie spawn after pike, and what does it cost them?
Pike fire at 4–10 °C (40–50 °F) almost as the ice leaves; muskie wait for 9–15 °C (48–59 °F), typically two to four weeks later, often using overlapping bays. The lag is a lineage-level trap wherever the two coexist: by the time muskie eggs hatch, that year's pike fry are already several centimeters long, fast, and gape-limited predators of exactly muskie-fry-sized prey. That head start — more than adult competition — is the standard explanation for pike displacing muskie after introductions. It is also a core justification for muskie stocking programs, which raise fingerlings past the vulnerable size before release.
