Can I fish for smallmouth in early spring anywhere I want?
No — check local regulations first. Because smallmouth spawn early and guard nests, many northern jurisdictions (much of Ontario and several US states, for example) close or restrict the bass season through spring, precisely to protect bed-guarding males whose removal exposes eggs and fry to predators. Rules vary by zone and sometimes by individual lake, and some areas allow catch-and-release only. The pre-spawn bite is spectacular where it is legal; make sure your water is one of those places.
