Where do muskie sit when there are no weed beds — wood, docks, sand, tailwaters?

A muskie needs an ambush edge near food; weeds are only the commonest version. In flowages and rivers, stump fields, logjams and fallen trees do the same job and hold fish from spring through fall; in the stocked reservoirs at the southern edge of the range, timber and current replace weeds almost entirely. Below dams, river fish moving upstream in spring stack in the slack water beside the flow, and in those southern rivers the tailwater current keeps fish feeding through winter — the prime season there. Sand and gravel flats are mostly travel water, until late fall in northern lakes, when ciscoes and whitefish spawn over gravel and rock shoals and the biggest females shadow them. Docks, boathouses and pad edges give up an occasional fish: bonus casts, not patterns. Closed seasons vary by jurisdiction.
