What do spring water levels have to do with pike conservation?
Nearly everything, in regulated waters. Pike eggs stick to flooded vegetation in mere centimeters to a meter of water for two to four weeks; if a dam drawdown, spring water management, or a fast natural recession drops the level during that window, a whole year-class strands and dies on the drying grass. Decades of marsh draining, shoreline development, and "tidy" water-level management have quietly cost pike more habitat than fishing pressure ever did in many systems. It is why wetland protection and spring-level rules are pike management, and why the weedy, mosquito-rich bay someone wants to dredge is often the most valuable pike water in the lake.
