How deep do crappie spawn?

Water clarity decides. The male needs enough light at the nest for eggs and fry, but enough cover from overhead predators — so in stained water beds sit shallow, 0.3–1 m (1–3 ft), while in clear lakes colonies drop to 1.8–3 m (6–10 ft) and occasionally deeper. That is why the angler wading the bank sees beds in a muddy reservoir but swears the clear lake "has no spawn" — its colonies are simply below sight, on the same protected flats near deep access. Search accordingly: shallow and visual in dark water, deeper with sonar or slow-trolled jigs in clear.
