Is bed fishing harmful? Should I do it?
It carries real cost: while the guarding male is off the nest, bluegill and other sunfish — the number-one egg predators — can raid it, and conservation research on nest-guarding bass shows prolonged removal reduces nest success. If you choose to fish beds: fight fish quickly, handle them with wet hands, skip the prolonged photo session, and release immediately at the nest. And check first — some jurisdictions close the season or restrict fishing during the spawn precisely for this reason. Where it is legal, how you do it decides most of the harm.
