Does walleye stocking actually work?

Sometimes decisively, sometimes not at all, and the difference is habitat. Where a lake lacks spawning substrate or has lost it, stocking can carry the entire fishery — many celebrated "walleye lakes," especially reservoirs and stocked systems across the US, exist only because agencies pour in fry or fingerlings on a schedule. Where natural reproduction works, stocking on top of it adds little and can even backfire, as hatchery fry compete with (and get eaten alongside) wild ones; agencies increasingly test whether a lake's wild hatch is limiting before stocking it. Fingerlings survive far better than fry but cost enormously more, which is why stocking is rationed. The honest summary: stocking is a prosthetic for broken spawning habitat, not a fertilizer for healthy lakes — and a fishery that depends on it is only as secure as its hatchery budget.
