Do walleye see color? Why do gold, orange, and chartreuse work so well?

Walleye have only two cone classes, with sensitivity peaking in the green and orange-red parts of the spectrum — blues and violets mostly collapse into dark shades. Gold, orange, and chartreuse sit almost exactly on those sensitivity peaks, which is why the classic walleye palette has survived a century of fashion: the fish genuinely separates those colors from the background, especially in the stained water and dim light where it feeds. In deep or dark water, though, color matters less than contrast and glow — a dark silhouette or a UV/glow finish often beats the "right" hue. Pick for visibility in the light you are actually fishing, not for the paint job.
