What light conditions are best for trout fishing?

Low light, almost universally. Trout eyes lack eyelids and adjustable pupils, so bright midday sun in clear water pushes rainbows and brook trout into shade, depth, or broken "riffle-roof" water, and makes them maximally able to inspect your offering; dawn, dusk, and overcast days flatten that disadvantage and bring big fish into the open. The exception is the lake trout, which already lives at depths of 20–30 m (66–98 ft) in summer where surface light barely matters — laker fishing runs on depth and bait location, not sky. In midsummer heat the low-light rule doubles, because dawn is also the coolest, best-oxygenated hour.
